Review: Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Rules

This review was originally written for The People’s Podcast, Pop Culture Leftovers.

Let me get things out in the open, right at the start.  This isn’t a review for the Dungeons & Dragons Movie (Toss) or for the Dungeons & Dragons Television Show (Nostalgic Tupperware!), but for the new, fifth edition of the fantasy tabletop gaming system released by Wizards of the Coast this year.

“Hi everyone, my name is Kevin, and I am an über-geek.”

I’ve been playing D&D (or DND) since I was about 16 years old.  I won’t bore you with more details about me and my history with D&D.  I’ve already covered that online elsewhere. Recently, my wife, Dana, started playing with my group and her perspective as a brand new player has helped guide and temper my review. ChupacabraCon 2015 Sessions

A quick update from your friendly neighborhood DM.

I’ll be running two Adventurers League games at the upcoming ChupacabraCon in Austin, Texas.

  • DDEX1-5: The Courting of Fire on Friday, January 9th, from 7 PM – 11 PM
An exiled cultist and his kobold minions are spotted searching long-forgotten ruins in the Dragonspire Mountains. Rumors say he looks for a precious gift to give to a fearsome dragon that dwells there. What he hopes to attain with his gift is unknown, but can’t be good for the citizens of Phlan.
  • DDEX1-6: The Scroll Thief on Saturday, January 10th, from 9 AM – 1 PM
Scholars Square is a relatively quiet corner of Phlan, but a series of odd thefts have the headmasters of various schools in the area concerned. The headmasters’ pleas for help have gone unanswered by the Black Fist, and the Lord Sage of Phlan decides to reach out to you and your kind to bring those responsible to justice.

If you are interested in signing up, then I highly encourage you to look at the Registration Information.

This should be an absolute riot and I’ll try to post updates to this page with my notes from running these two games.

Status update

It’s with a heavy heart that I have to report that the Runaway Dragons Podcast is taking a break.  Life has just put too many obstacles in our place for now.  It’s my hope that in the new year, we will be bringing the podcast back to life with a new cast of misfits and hopefully we can entertain and educate our listeners.

Keep watching the page, and I’ll give updates as I can.

Stabby’s Background (Hidden Journal)

Adelard, a name I have not used in a while. It’s got a nice ring to it, but perhaps it is best to leave it buried like the rest of my past. My family were members of Cult Dragon, and they enjoyed the reputation and fortune for a while. We enjoyed fine things, although I always felt empty. I still remember my mother giving me toys, treats, and anything that could stir any reaction from me. Read the rest of this entry »

Brim’s Journal 2

Kobolds had been felled and the air was thick with both the disgusting glue-like substance that had been spilled upon the floor as well as the smell of death. We stood over our victory with exhaustion upon her bodies and sounds echoing quickly up from behind us. Peering into each others eyes we quickly backtracked, moving the boulders aside so we can easily enter and exit this joining room. We enter the hallway at the junction and back into an adjacent room that served as the lizard kennel. The enemy soon appears but only as recon, quickly taking note of us and almost as if with a knowing smirk they back off down the cross-sectioned hallway from our own bottle neck strategy, forcing our hand. Podcast Updates…

For everyone listening to the Podcasts, there have been a few changes.  To make it easier for everyone to download and get the most accurate information, we were forced to remove and re-add all of the episodes.  Sorry about that, but they should all synchronize shortly.  Normally iTunes updates its links within 24 hours, so if you don’t see the updates today, you should see them tomorrow.

Before the Journals…

The world is a dark and lonely place when you’re a human. One can only imagine what it’s like being born from Hell fire. I don’t remember a lot of my early years but I do remember having a mother at some point, though I cannot say if she dead or alive, nor do I really care. I have a father who, whether biological, magical, or adoptive, has taken it upon himself to make my life as hellish as the realm of which he is from. However, the effect is more to those around me than myself. Read the rest of this entry »
